Welcome to Class 1! We are a mixed Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 class. We love learning about lots of different things. We work brilliantly together and love talking about our learning. Have a look at all the exciting things we have been doing in our classroom.

World Book Day celebrations!

Class 1 had so much fun celebrating World Book Day. We all came to school dressed as a 'wow' word. There were some fantastic costumes on show. We made some wonderful book marks, shared lots of stories and made some videos talking about some of our favourite stories. We also took part in a 'Story in a Jar' competition which had some amazing entries. These were judged by a visitor from Ripon Library Service who came to talk to us about how we can use the library and to read us some great new stories. The lucky winners, Cressie and Joseph, will be able to visit The Little Ripon Bookshop who kindly donated a book token for the children to spend in the shop.

Super shapes!

We have made, sorted, labelled and described 2-D and 3-D shapes in maths. The children have been working hard to use the correct vocabulary.

Amazing animals!

In science we are learning all about animals. We had a brilliant afternoon investigating similarities and differences between animals. We looked closely at fish and octopus. We noticed lots of things. The children were so enthusiastic and very hands on! We learnt that fish have tongues and teeth but octopi don't, that the inside of a fish's gills are very interesting to look at and that animals have different ways of protecting themselves from predators.

Early reading.

The Reception children have enjoyed exploring the reading areas inside and outside.

Fun in the forest!

Class 1 got a very exciting letter from the animals. They had wandered into the woods and needed shelter to protect them from the Autumnal weather. The children showed great team work, working together to build cosy homes for the animals to live in.

Multisensory phonics.

We use lots of different approaches to learning to read and write in Class 1. Here the children are learning to use the sounds they are learning to make words using the sound blocks.

Practical place value

The Year 1 and Year 2 children practiced their place value skills in an outdoor maths session. They showed a really good knowledge of how to use the greater than and less than sybols to compare numbers.

Really good reasoning!

The Year 1 children were set a challenge to find out which was the most popular number that dominoes add up to. They worked together systematically and could talk about what they had found out.

Brilliant blues!

As part of our work on landscapes and cityscapes in art the Year 2 children have been exploring different shades of colours and how to make them. They made as many shades of blue as they could and used these as a background for their cityscapes of London.

Egg Drop Challenge!

As part of our work in science on properties of materials we all made 'egg protectors'. We chose materials carefully and hoped that they wouldn't crack when we dropped them from the ladders. Five children successfully protected their eggs and everyone had lots of fun testing them!

World Book Day Fun!

On world book day we all came dressed up as Baddies from Books. There were some fantastic costumes! We shared lots of stories and made posters and book marks about our favourite books.

Autumn 2018

We visited Ripon Outwood Academy to take part in 'Infant agility'. We tried lots of different activities, including javelin, football and balancing.

We have been working hard on our teamwork skills in PE. We have enjoyed playing team games and problem solving together using lots of different equipment.

We have also enjoyed developing our PE gymnastic skills.

Our new starters have settled in beautifully! They have enjoyed exploring the classroom environment and are already working on their number skills inside and outside of the classroom.
